Today, in this particular photo, they were only scattering when they saw me and my camera. By sunset, they seem to have circled back to the gradually freezing pond, 100+ strong.
To paraphrase what Joni wrote, they’ve got the urge for going and they’ve got the wings to go, BUT…
They’ve got the urge for eating too. Seems to have won.
