“They Do the Walk of Life…”

Canada Geese in Mating Dance

The astonishing mating ceremony of this nesting pair Canada Geese commenced with gyrating necks and loud honks—both of which you’ll see enacted in future posts— punctuated with this Spread Wing pose that looks to me like a privacy curtain.

(With apologies to Mark Knopfler.)

Yesterday I was honored by our nearby nesting pair of Canada Geese, as they permitted me to witness and photograph an elaborate dance.

This image kind of sums up the sacred mystery of this ceremony for me. Others have called it a Courtship Display, during which one may admire the majesty of the other. I’m not so sure about this, as the Gander (the larger bird, or so I believe, standing in back) appears to be looking away from the spread wings of the Goose. Perhaps it’s a moment of vulnerability, during which she shows how much she trusts him?

Whatever it means, it’s a beautiful moment.
