Happy Halloween from Rosie!

Rosie is an esteemed member of the Philadelphia Insectarium, and she graciously agreed to a portrait session. This is actually my favorite photograph of her, which I unaccountably passed over in my earlier post.

So many subscribers have been been fascinated by Rosie the Friendly Tarantula that I’m posting another shot of her.

In the time between these posts, I have discovered an enormous community of tarantula-lovers, many of whom attest their pets purr when stroked. Among the most popular species are pink-toed tarantulas, which I intend to seek out for a future portrait session.

PLEASE NOTE, HOWEVER: If you check out the color of Rosie’s exoskeleton underneath her fur, you’ll notice a distinctive red tinge. Doubtless this is how Rosie received her name!

By the way, here’s a trick question: how many legs can you count in this photograph?

Answer: 8, just like other arachnids. The front two limbs are called Pedipalps and tarantulas use them as sensory organs, helping them feel, smell and taste. Try this question at your next dinner party. 😁
