Slamming on the Brakes!

Little Blue Heron Landing

Landing on the edge of a favorite salt marsh, Lyle the Little Blue Heron puts down the wing flaps!

Lyle the Little Blue Heron puts on a show wherever he lands.

Herons are among many birds who take off and land into the wind. This gives the bird much more control, but, as every pilot knows, you must put down your flaps to take advantage of the braking effect.

In Lyle’s case, it looks very much as if he’s flying backward. Happy landings, Lyle! We do hope to see you again soon.

P.S. I posted a similar shot of Lyle some time ago, but it’s not the same, and I can’t resist posting every image I have of my favorite bird in the world. More to come soon.

Here is a closer crop, revealing his variegated colors.
