I come out here sometimes when I want to think of an America I still love…
An America that pledged its lives, its fortunes and its sacred honor to advance the idea that all men are created equal. One that went to war to defend the outlandish idea of freedom of religion.
And when I stood here recently, overlooking a battlefield in which Americans died for these freedoms — weeping inwardly that too many Americans despise these sacred ideals today—I found myself hoping desperately that I was simply watching a sunset in America, and not the twilight of America.
