Here’s Clyde, among the first Canada Geese to erupt from the freezing pond, seen a split second later than our original shot, lit by golden rays of a setting December sun…

And it seems to me he flies almost vertically! Look at how his wings have bent to accomplish this remarkable feat. And observe the determination in his eyes and bill.

He’s evidently exerting all his strength in these first few wingbeats. And once again, I must wonder, what passes through his mind at this moment? Is it fear of being left behind, pleasure in the act of flight, obsessive compulsion —or maybe all three?
