Swoop for Your Supper!

It’s fascinating to watch Sammy the Snowy Egret swoop for his supper…

He lights on the edge of a salt marsh just as the waters approach the hour of low tide, stranding fish, insects and crustaceans alike in diminishing pools…

Then he scans the shallows with sharp golden eyes, looking for tiny ripples…

Next he silently launches and swoops low, dangling his gorgeous golden toes and teasing the surface with his golden lore, “rounding up” all possible prey into a watery corral…

And the moment he spots an especially luscious insect 🐜 , fish 🐠 or crustacean🦞…

Down darts his spear of a black beak— and it’s suppertime for Sammy!

This photograph captures Sammy as he brakes above his corral of possible prey—feathers fanning out to slow his flight, just before he spears the fattest candidate in his little herd.

I find his swoops very pretty, while a friend of mine commented they are actually “pretty” gruesome.

How about YOU? Is this moment beautiful or gory? Maybe both? Let me know with your LIKE and COMMENT and thank you so much, dear Follower—you’re the best!
