Meet the Missus

Aha! I see a second Great Blue Heron not far from Billy!

Having befriended other Great Blues, I know they prefer to be solitary foragers. So you will forgive my presumption that this more active bird might be Wilhelmina — Willi to her friends— mate to Billy.

Judging from her active appetite, not to mention the spring season, I also guess she may be breeding, or perhaps even about to lay! This means, come September, I may find more little fishers in the vicinity. Let me hope!

Sharp eyes, Willi! Or perhaps she hears something?
Gotcha! Whatever it is, this morsel is already working its way through her neck. Not a meal, but a tasty app.

Why is she dragging her yellow lower beak over the surface? Having watched Snowy Egrets do something similar with their golden feat, I’m going to guess it’s a fishing tactic.
